All Dolls Are Art 2011: Toys in the Attic
July 28-31, 2011 - Wyndham Garden Hotel - Austin, TX
Annie 2-day class with Cyndi Mahlstadt
Skill Level: Intermediate
Class maximum - 18 students
Annie is a free standing wire armature figure that measures 17”. She has a needle sculpted face with glass button eyes. The techniques taught in this class give a lot of room for self-expression and each doll turns out so unique!
Fun and exciting techniques covered in this workshop:
- You’ll learn how to soft sculpt a face using a needle and thread. Cyndi will show you her favorite methods to create a face. For this project we will be using “DollSkin” for the face, arms, and bodice. “DollSkin” is a knit fabric with a one way stretch. Because it is a knit fabric it’s great for needle sculpting, and yet because of the one-way stretch it really helps you to control the final size and shape of the body parts.
- You’ll learn how to create a soft feminine face using acrylic paint, colored pencils, and colored pens.
- You’ll learn how to insert glass button eyes and create eyelids – this is a very simple way to create beautiful eyes.
- You’ll learn how to create a free standing figure using wire and batting. Cyndi will share simple tricks and tips on how to balance and pose a figure to stand. You’ll also learn ways to needle sculpt the batting to create more definition and a shapelier body.
- Costuming without a sewing machine? Absolutely! You’ll learn fun wrapping and draping techniques to create a whimsical costume using strips of fabric, scraps of lace, recycled clothing such as sweaters, miscellaneous ribbons and trims, bits and pieces of treasured fabrics (you know the ones we save because they’re too pretty to throw away). This is a really fun way to create a costume!
Some pre-class sewing and prep-work is required.
